Meet The Characters

Bennett

Cora’s first Chihuahua is a rich, golden honey tan with a daub of dark chocolate on her back and a super soft creamy neck. She has outsize ears and hearing to match. Bennett is an in-charge, responsible dog perfectly suited to be Chief Inspector Brown. She is friendly to all people, but she loves Cora above all else.

Lola

Lola, Cora’s second Chihuahua, looks like a mini-cow. She is fun-loving and fearless, eager to take on any animal that comes along—alligators, big black cats or foxes. Growly with people she does not know, and not a natural jumper, Lola takes her Sergeant Starfoot detective role very seriously. She is always hungry and adores popcorn.

Cora

Coral Ann Howder, Cora to friends, loves her Chihuahuas but seems to be too caught up in writing a book to have a clue about their adventures. She loves opera and follows a vegan diet.

Moc

Moc the Mockingbird is the bird to know on Bald Head Island. He speaks all languages including Dog, really Canine, and Cat, really Feline. He understands Human, but never, never speaks to people. Moc is delighted to meet Bennett and Lola and introduce them to his island.

Jug

Jug, aka Jugular the Ruffian, seems to be a huge, vicious mongrel at first. As the story unfolds, however, his true character comes through.

Spiff

Spiff is a 22-pound black cat who rules the roost at Jug’s house. He is an accomplished hunter and every bit as dangerous and mean as he looks.

Big Mama

A 300-pound loggerhead female, Big Mama returns to Bald Head Island, where she hatched some 40 years ago, every 2-3 years to lay her eggs. She never forgets her first home, or anything else important to her, never ever.
